Newlyweds are supposed to have blissful fun marriages before the real work starts. But what do you do when it feels like your marriage is falling apart from day 1.  Read on to hear my experience with a rough season of marriage as a Newlywed, and how we got through it.

Going on dates is a great way to stay connected with your spouse.  When life gets busy, it can be so easy to forget to invest in our relationship like we should.  Having a regular date night can ensure that each week we have intentional time together.  My favorite date night is the simple dinner and a movie.  Movies that I pick of course! But, I thought that having date nights ideas that are different from the norm would be a great way to spice things up.

1. Dinner Competition

This idea is based on a popular cooking show.  Each spouse should choose 3 mystery ingredients for the other from the grocery store.  Choose one meal to make such as spaghetti, tacos, pizza, etc.  Then, exchange the ingredients you bought with each other.  Give yourselves 1 hour to make the best version of that dish using your secret ingredients. Choose the best dish.  The winner gets to plan the next date night.

2.Painting and Pizza

Pick up a pie from your favorite pizza restaurant.  Grab 6 canvases and paint (or markers)  from the craft store.  Play 3 different genres of music for 15 minutes each.  Let them dry and see how the music influenced you both. Hang them up in your home and don't forget to title and sign them.

3. Escape Room

Get together with 2 other couples and find an Escape Room near you.  Try to get through it within the time limit.  Afterwards, choose a delicious restaurant to spend dinner talking and fellowshiping together.

4. Minute to Win It

Invite 4-6 couples over for a minute to win it party.  Search the internet and YouTube for Minute-To-Win -It Games.  I find it best to save video examples of each game to play before each round. Put out party food and give it a go.  Send out the games prior to your party to give your guests time to practice! Don't forget to take pictures and videos!

5. Have a Camp out

This can be done on campgrounds or just in your backyard.  Pack your car or your backyard with all your camping materials.  Grill out and snuggle up.  Watch the stars and just enjoy each others company.  If you don't have a backyard, you could always camp out in your living room, just make a fort.  Spend the night in the tent or finish your night indoors.

6.Picnic in the Park

Pack a picnic lunch and blanket.  Drive to the park and put your phones on vibrate.  For 2 hours focus on each other.  Talk to each other. Laugh with each other. Be intentional about investing in your spouse. Then take pictures throughout the park and appreciate the beauty that you see.

7. Serve Together

Find a place to volunteer and serve together.  Make meals for families at your local Children's hospital.  Serve at church.  Make a commitment to volunteer 3 times for 1 month.  Reflect on how you can do more in your local and global community. Then make a plan of practical action steps to achieve these ideas.

8. Plan a vacation

Spend a date night planning a vacation.  Plan practical steps for going on the  vacation.  Make a poster of milestones you need to hit before you go on your vacation.  Then put on music from that vacation and pretend you are there for the rest of the night.

I hope you give a few or all of these ideas a try.  If you can't find a babysitter, no Problem! So many of these ideas can also be done with children. When you try an idea out, be sure to come back and comment on how it went for you.  If you're in need of conversation starters, be sure to download 10 conversation starters for your next date night.
