Spending time with the Lord becomes so difficult when we become busy. I personally, find that I see more of my weaknesses when I am busy, and remember just how fragile I am without God's grace and mercy. When we neglect God, we are unknowingly isolating ourselves from our greatest source of love, power, and encouragement. However, when we hold ourselves accountable, we don't let busyness deter our growing relationship with the Lord. Accountability is key to overcoming busyness for the sake of our spiritual growth. Here are 3 easy ways to hold yourself more accountable to spending time with the Lord.
1.Don’t Make Excuses
There is no excuse that justifies us not spending time with God. Decide that you will make that true in your life. When you are tired, you stay up a little later to read your Bible. When you have a busy day at work, you spend your car ride worshiping God for all that he has done for you. We can make up so many excuses, but none of them are good enough. When you think of an excuse, try to find a way to spend time with God in spite of that situation. The more you do it, the easier you will find it to be.
2. Set Goals and Make a Plan
You can't keep yourself accountable if you don’t have a goal or a plan. Maybe your goal is to spend 1 hour having a devotional with God. Or Perhaps, you want to spend 30 minutes praying for a specific person in your life. Whatever the case may be, once you have your goals, make a plan. Write it down. Plans become more real when we actually write them down. Post it somewhere you will see it frequently as a reminder.
3. Find An Accountability Partner
Accountability partners are so important for us to have in our walk with the Lord. Maybe it's your spouse, a friend, or a mentor. Find someone who can have tough conversations with you when you are putting your busyness before God. Keep your communication with your partner open and frequent. Be honest about times when you feel unmotivated or discouraged. Pray together regularly about your relationship with the Lord.
Today we found 3 ways that we can hold ourselves more accountable. When we take these steps, we find that our excuses we used to make seem silly compared to the richness of our time with the Lord. We need to read more scripture, pray, and worship God in various ways in order to grow deeper in our relationship with the Lord. Do you find that you are holding yourself accountable in your busy times? Do you make work or kids your biggest excuse for not spending time with God? Are you being a good steward of the time that you have been given? Evaluate your life and see where busyness gets in the way of your walk with the Lord.
