"And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him." 1 John 5:14-15
How do I start?
Prayer journals don’t have to be really complex. You only need a journal and a pencil. Your prayer journal can contain prayers of any length, scriptures, poems, or even songs. It is up to you to decide how you want to pray. Some days, I just write scriptures that I want to pray over someone’s life or a song whose words I find fitting. Remember that your prayers don’t have to contain all of these “BIG” words. ( Matthew 6:5-8 is a really good scripture for remembering this!) They just need to be genuine words spoken in faith. Your heart is what matters to God. If you are praying just to seem holy, then your prayers will be much less effective than praying from a place of humility.
Get the Right Materials
I find that the right materials can really affect the heart you have behind a particular action. Generally, if I have lots of colorful pens, I am really excited to write. It gets my heart and mind in the right place if it wasn't already. I make sure to have whiteout for pens and erasers for pencils ready for mistakes. I have also found that the notebook makes a huge difference to me. In Korea, There are so many different stationary options. As a result, I generally buy a new notebook every two weeks for various things. I have found that sometimes I really enjoy lined paper, while other times I like blank pages. What kind of notebook do you think is the best for you. If notebooks aren't your thing though, you can have an electronic prayer journal. There are so many apps out there designed specifically for prayer journals. Just go to the
apple store google play store and download whatever looks best to you.
Position Your Heart
When you start to pray you need to make sure that you have positioned your heart in the right way. You want to be in a humble position advocating for yourself or another person. If you just see it as a thing you should check off your list, your prayers will likely be less effective. God knows your heart so he will know if you don't really want to talk to him. Ready your heart and mind to go before our great king, he loves to hear from us.
You have your materials. You have positioned your heart towards the Lord. Now it's time to write. Begin to pray to the Lord and record yourself as you pray. That's it! You don't have to write quickly. Just take your time and contemplatively write the words that you are sending up to the Lord. Sometimes I will just write a date and song lyrics like "It is well with my soul" or "Oceans by Hillsong". You can even write passages of scripture that you want to pray back to the Lord. It is all just based on what you feel the Lord leading you to do.
Prayer Journal for a specific person
Each time you feel the Lord leading you to pray for that person, you write it in your prayer journal. Notice that I said when the Lord leads you. This means you don’t have to necessarily write in it every day. You can, of course, pray in times when he isn’t necessarily pushing you to pray for that person as well. When you feel like you have finished your prayer journal for someone, it is nice to give it to them. Make sure you date each prayer so that they can trace back how a specific prayer was answered.
Prayer journals are a great way to be intentional about praying for others and yourself. They give you something concrete to hold as you visualize each prayer. It's like your own little diary to the Lord. Try to journal your prayers 3 times this week for yourself and others to try it out. Im sure you won't regret it!
"Loving father, help us to pray to you with an earnest heart. Lifting you up above all others. Show us your will so that we will pray your desires back to you. Help us to be consistent in not only journaling, but in our prayers in general. Thank you my king. In Jesus' Name, Amen."
